Buying Property in Garrucha

Garrucha street and shops.Situated on the south eastern coast of Spain and around 50 minutes away from Almeria and its airport Garrucha is a small fishing town that has over the past few decades become a very popular holiday destination with various kinds of property from apartments to villas for sale.


Although in recent years tourism has become an important revenue stream for the town its main income is still from the fishing industry and Garrucha prides itself on the quality of its locally caught seafood which can be found being cooked with produce sourced from local farms in most of the excellent little restaurants around the town. The port of Garrucha is relatively large considering the size of the town and is capable of accommodating commercial ships as well as several hundred pleasure craft and the large fishing fleet that can be seen returning each day to auction off their catch on the quayside.

Garrucha harbour.The town has two beaches separated by the port. The southern beach is the smaller of the two but is the only town beach in Europe to achieve the prestigious 'blue flag' title. The northern beach stretches for miles up the coast to Palmeras and can be used to walk to the neighbouring town of Playa Vera with its large water park, a great favourite with the kids. To the south of Garrucha is the town of Mojacar another traditional Spanish town that has grown popular over the last few years and which plays host to the Marina Golf Club.

Fresh seafood from Garrucha market.Even with its increased tourism the old part of Garrucha still has a very Spanish feel to it and although the town is very welcoming and provides good facilities for holidaymakers most of the bars and restaurants there still mainly serve traditional Spanish fare. It is however the desire to experience a holiday in a more traditional Spanish coastal town, rather than an ex pat orientated one, that draw many people to Garrucha in the first place.

Naturally with the increased interest in the town as a holiday resort the town has expanded mostly to the north and Garrucha now stretches up into the Las Marinas development.
