A large city with its own airport directly on the south coast of Spain, Almeria is place with a colourful and long history and a mix of both old and new property for sale. It has been in existence for over a thousand years and was founded by the Moors who occupied much of southern Spain and who built their second largest Andalusian castle the Alcazaba here before the Christians took possession of the city two hundred years after it was built. They however lost it within the decade and it was another three hundred years before the city fell permanently into Christian hands.

Almeria has always been an important and busy place as can be seen by the size of its port which accommodates pleasure craft along with ferries and cargo ships. Today the cities main export is agricultural produce with fields covered by huge sheets allow for year round growth of crops although as with many towns and cities on the coast of Spain tourism is now playing a big part in the income of the people who live here.

One of the greatest attractions to Almeria is its architecture, which is a fantastic mixture of east and west and leaving aside all the amazing historic buildings and monuments around Almeria, hours can be spent just walking round just admiring the city itself. Having a large population of both residents and tourists means there are plenty of cafes to sit outside to enjoying the atmosphere as well as everything else you would expect of a large city such a huge range of restaurants, bars shops, theatres, museums schools, sports facilities and of course property of all types for sale.

If all this becomes a little bit too claustrophobic then a trip to one of the Natural parks could be what you need. The countryside around Almeria is stunningly rugged and beautiful. The National park has paths that will take you along the coast to find your own little private beach or a little more inland where you will find numerous little villages or even leave the beaten track and head for more challenging terrain.

Almeria also has a large stretch of gorgeous beach and it is adjacent to this that most of the newer parts of the town have been built.
